The Miami Herald has a great article up, Making music out of menace, about the demilitarizations efforts in Columbia and the work of César López who construct guitars from rifles–the resulting instrument is dubbed an escopetarra. His work straddles the political and artistic as his aims are to draw attention to the suffering of those caught in the crossfire and in this aim the Rapid Response Artistic Battalion, formed with several friends and musicians, provides free concerts to areas hit by violence with the goal of both easing the pain of the victims as well as drawing attention to those acts of violence. Damn cool statement and a damn cool instrument.
