The MindControls - S/T

10899081_155_155.jpegSeattle-based Dirtnap Records has consistently cranked out fantastic punk rock records since its 1999 inception. Dirtnap bands are fast and raw, with an occasional streak of new wave. The ‘03 compilation Dirtnap Across the Northwest does a fine job of capturing the essence of the label’s characteristic sound. There’s a pretty high roster turnover rate but even if you’ve never heard of a given band, you can pretty much count on one thing: they will rawk!

The latest to bear the label is the self-titled debut by The Mind Controls. Fast and furious, this Montreal three-piece knocks out eleven songs in twenty-one minutes. They’re nothing original and even describe themselves as sounding like “stuff you’ve heard a million times.” But sometimes Johnny Thunder’s riffs played at Ramones speed is just what you need to scratch that aural itch. The Mind Controls are above average at the snotty three chords and you’re out punk standard and this first album provides a bite-sized bit of rowdy, mindless fun. Stream three tracks from MySpace, check out an mp3 at Dirtnap, or download the whole thing from eMusic.

Yup, pretty good dirtnap release, not great. The gem on their current release schedule will be the new High Tension Wires album due in June. ;-)

Oh yeah, I think they are no longer based in Seattle, their collateral all says Portland now…

Yeah, definitely looking forward to the new High Tension Wires. Loved their first one. Thanks for the heads up about the relocation. I did notice “When in Portland visit our record store” at the Dirtnap site but didn’t realize the whole operation had moved.
